Door Frame Details

Checklist

  1. The following procedure should be followed when preparing Door Frame Details:

    1. Secure all information necessary to prepare details such as Finish Schedule, Clarification of Partition Designations, Frame and Door Schedule and Floor Plans.
    2. Determine which Door Frame Conditions can be done as a Head and Jamb and which conditions require an elevation such as Storefront, Automatic Sliding Doors, Borrowed Lights, etc.
    3. Select applicable Door Frame Details from the "Standard Detail File."
    4. Draw the remainder of the conditions on 8-1/2" x 11" or 8-1/2" x 14 precut polyester film tracing sheets.
    5. Convert both to transparencies and tape to the rear of the carrier (tracing) sheet.
    6. Arrange details on carrier sheet with the first one in the lower right hand comer and move to the left of the Sheet.
    7. When project is completed, give originals to the Technical Advocate for incorporation into the "Standard Detail File."
    8. Door Frame Details should be done in compliance with the recommendations of the "Hollow Metal Technical and Design Manual" which is located in the "Technical Library."
  2. Jamb and Head Configuration

    1. Jamb Conditions are Horizontal Sections at Door Frames, therefore if conditions vary on each side of Door Frame such as different type anchors, different relationship of Frame to Wall, etc. both conditions must be detailed and labeled Jamb "A:' and Jamb "B."
    2. Dimension jamb and head "face" (2", 4", etc.)
    3. Dimension jamb and head depth only when Frame depth is less than Wall or Partition thickness.
    4. As Jamb and Head Sections are drawn for the various conditions on a Project and it becomes apparent that Jamb or Head Sections, that were drawn for previous conditions are applicable to the condition at hand, we may refer to those by saying: "For Jamb, See Detail 3" or "For Jamb, See Detail 3, Jamb A."
  3. Wall or Partition Construction

    1. Dimension Wall or Partition (overall) which would correspond with the "THROAT" of the Frame if frame wraps wall.
    2. Dimension components of Wall or Partition System.
    3. Identify all components of Wall or Partition System.
    4. It is not the intent of Door Frame Details to clarify Partition construction such as arrangement of studs, etc. but basic Partition construction must be shown to clarify the type of anchors to be used.
  4. Jamb Anchors appropriate for the Wall or Partition System.

  5. Lintels

    1. For design of Masonry Lintels when applicable, see attached "Required Reinforcing for Simply Supported Reinforced Concrete Masonry Lintels" which also appears in "Standard Detail File" and should be put on the Drawings in the form of a transparency.
    2. For design of steel Lintels when applicable, see attached "Required Steel Lintels for Masonry Construction."
  6. Sealant and Caulking

    1. Sealant is used on exterior applicators and caulking on interior.
  7. Sill Conditions

    1. Door Frame Details of Exterior Conditions should include a Detail of the sill condition. Coordinate thresholds with Section 08710 "Finish Hardware."
    2. Interior Sill Details and Floor Transition Details should be divorced from Door Frame Details and all arranged together with "Interior Elevations and Details" or "Miscellaneous Details."
  8. Miscellaneous Items

    1. The following items should be shown on the Door Frame Details if not sufficiently covered in Section 08710 "Finish Hardware."
      1. Weatherstripping on all exterior doors and selected interior doors.
      2. Sound seals on doors which require noise transmission reduction.
      3. Avoid locating the "backbend" of the frame flush with an intersecting partition. The "backbend" of frames should not be less than 4" from intersecting partitions or walls.
      4. Refer to "Frame and Door Schedule" portion of the Contract Document Checklist for other information in regard to Door Frames.
  9. Each detail shall bear a "Door Frame Detail Number" in lower half of a 5/8" diameter circle to match the lower half of the "Door or Opening Designation" shown at each door or opening on Floor Plans.
