Stairs


  1. Stairs may be "Custom Designed" and if so, all components must be clearly detailed, all members sized and handrails completely detailed.
  2. Stairs may be "Pre-assembled" and if so, only Riser and Tread dimensions need to be given, the construction of stair shaft, roof construction, etc.
  3. Enlarged Plan of stairs at 3/8" minimum.
  4. Column Reference Grids on Enlarged Plans and Sections.
  5. Indication of North on all Enlarged Plans.
  6. Dimension shaft clearances, stair widths, platforms, etc.
  7. Full Section or Sections depending on complexity.
  8. Number of risers and treads.
  9. Floor to floor heights.
  10. Size of all members supporting stairs (if custom designed).
  11. Enlarged detail of typical riser and tread (if custom designed).
  12. Handrail details (Stringer and Wall) (if custom designed).
  13. Connections of stairs at floors and intermediate platforms (if custom designed).
  14. Indicate extent of base if called for in Finish Schedule.
  15. Review stair with Structural Consultant (if custom designed).
  16. Handicapped Considerations
    1. Maximum height of risers - 7 inches
    2. Minimum height of risers - 4 inches
    3. Maximum tread depth-14 inches
    4. Minimum tread depth - 11 inches
  17. Non-slip surface on treads.
  18. Check applicable codes for required design of handrails and/or guard rails.
  19. Coordinate the design of concrete stairs with Structural Details.
  20. "Drawing Title Designation" on all Enlarged Plans, or Sections, etc.
